PROGRAM
The Spazi Crystagl is the largest crystal group intact found in Europe. The small town of Lumbrien, Swizterland lies opposite the mountain where the crystal was discovered. The artifact, now in the valley town of Ilanz, has been purchased by Lumbrein and will be brought home. The project, a museum, will house the crystal with simplicity. No steward will guard the museum, and very little electricity will be used, if any. This museum is simply a house to celebrate the beauty of the crystal, emphasize the nature of the landscape, and it’s rich cultural history as part of a mythological trail.
RESPONSE
For two weeks, we explored the landscape, culture, and precedents in Switzerland. While in Lumbrein, we also worked with native materials such as wood, clay, tufa, and rock similar to slate. Our site skirted the edge of an extreme slope, with 180 degree views of the rest of the `mythological trail’. As with carving tufa, I worked reductively creating spaces to view the landscape, light the crystal, and other artifacts. Inherently open to the elements, this design is free from maintenance costs and seasonally occupied, as a monument might be.
