Hello, I am a recent graduate of Rhode Island School of Design, with a Master of Architecture (M.Arch), 2011.
My life as a maker is intricately tied up with my thoughts about responsible, elegant design. Throughout graduate school and in my design work experiences, I have been interested in the tension between beauty and use, and in sustainable and equitable design. I perceive this tension as a catalyst, rather than a barrier, to great design. My experiences as an artist, a musician, and an educator all contribute significantly to my design work. Architectural interests include vernacular, sustainable, civic, educational, theater, library, museum, and sacred space design.
During a wintersession travel studio at RISD, I traveled to Switzerland to study the vernacular style of building and dwelling in the Alps. In anticipation of designing a museum, we looked at building forms and their relationship to slope as it had developed over thousands of years. These forms celebrated a marriage between beauty and use that allowed the two to become indistinguishable. They were truly inspiring.
During another travel studio to Hale County, Alabama, our focus was rural community development via design and entrepreneurship. We were tasked with looking at interconnected systems and creating connections, rather than just a singular architectural intervention. The importance of understanding and leveraging connections, resources, and communities has been as much a part of architecture for me as the more abstract nature of beauty and inspired design.
Currently, I seek a position that leverages my creativity, curiosity, and strong work ethic to positively contribute to the built environment. Please feel free to contact me with inquiries or opportunities.
“I think as designers we realize design is a signal of intention, but it also has to occur within a world and we have to understand that world in order to imbue our designs with inherent intelligence.” – William McDonough
“The goal of social design is to improve the quality of life on earth. The greatest hurdle is disbelief in our own potential- learning to believe we can design and build a better world.” – William S. Coperthwaite
“It (Beauty) creates, without itself fulfilling, the aspiration for enduring certitude. It comes to us, with no work of our own; then leaves us prepared to undergo a giant labor.” – Elaine Scarry
